Form and Function

In need of a new survival knife, I purchased this Schrade purely based on good reviews and a budget-friendly price. It came sharp and ready to use. The straight blade holds an edge better than most, but the saw-tooth back would be a last-ditch effort as a saw. The handle is extremely comfortable and the blade is nice and thick giving you confidence in it’s ability to smash, bend and pry.

The tactical look of the blade is quite appealing, but is it just for show? I’d say not. Even though the saw in the spine isn’t the most effective, the front guard covers the finger well reducing unwanted slip and the flat area at the base of the spine allows for comfortable consistent pressure from the thumb.

The last and one of the most enjoyable parts of the knife is the multi-tool that slips inside the base of the handle. With a spring-loaded pin to secure it, the tool only comes out on purpose. It contains a variety of small-sized wrenches, a small gut hook and of course a bottle-opener.

Rating and Recommended Use

  • EDC Rating: 3/10
  • Hunting Rating: 9/10
  • Camping Rating: 8/10

With a thick sharp blade, finger protection, and a useful multi-tool in the handle, the Schrade SCHF27 is an ideal survival or hunting knife… but I wouldn’t recommend carrying it around town on your hip. Highly recommended.
